MotoGP leader Marquez claims 6th pole

MotoGP world championship leader Marc Marquez will start the San Marino Grand Prix from pole position on Sunday after setting a new qualifying lap record at the Misano circuit.

Marquez clocked a time of 1 minute, 32.915 seconds on his final lap to secure a sixth pole position of the season, breaking Casey Stoner’s record of 1:33.138 set two years ago.

The 20-year-old Honda rookie suffered a high-speed fall in practice but his confidence seemed unaffected.

Defending champion Jorge Lorenzo was more than half a second slower and will start second, with Yamaha teammate Valentino Rossi third.

Dani Pedrosa, Cal Crutchlow and Aleix Espargaro start from row two.

Marquez has 233 points, 30 more than Honda teammate Pedrosa, with Lorenzo nine points further back.
