Supercars champ hopes Reynolds ‘shuts up’

Supercars champion Scott McLaughlin isn’t sure what impact changes to rival Holden cars will have this weekend but if it keeps rival David Reynolds quiet, he’ll be a happy man.

Holden’s fleet of Commodores have all undergone alterations ahead of the Auckland SuperSprint at Pukekohe Park after McLaughlin’s Ford Mustang again dominated last month’s event at Tailem Bend in South Australia.

Changes include the removal of the high-level brake light detail from the tailgate, the addition of a gurney to the rear wing endplates and the extension of the front undertray.

“Hopefully, just for everyone’s sake, and for everyone’s hearing and stuff, it just shuts Dave Reynolds up. Then we’ll be right,” McLaughlin told AAP.

McLaughlin and Penrite Racing star Reynolds have been engaged in a war of words after an on-track tussle at the Townsville 400.

Before the trip to South Australia last month the pair again traded barbs with Reynolds labelling McLaughlin “boring” while McLaughlin replied by saying he’d grown up where the 2017 Bathurst champion hadn’t.

Reynolds prepared for this weekend’s event by announcing he’d signed a mammoth 10-year contract extension on Thursday to stay with Erebus Motorsport until 2029.

McLaughlin will compete in the 100th Supercars round of his career this weekend and will set a new record for the most wins in a season with victory in either race.

He said he was confident his DJR Team Penske Mustang would again be the car to beat in its first appearance at Pukekohe.

“I’m probably a bit more comfortable with our pace going into this weekend,” he said.

“We were fast here in our old car and I think we’ll be even faster again. Hopefully we can make it happen but, it’s a little bit of a mixed bag with the weather. It will be interesting.”

The Auckland SuperSprint gets underway on Friday with two practice sessions before a 70-lap race each on Saturday and Sunday.
