V8s set to stay at Homebush until 2016

The end-of-season V8 Supercars event in Sydney is set to remain at Homebush for the next three years.

News Limited reported on Wednesday that the final round of the championship – the Sydney 500 – on the tight street circuit around the former Olympic precinct will be held each December until 2016.

V8 Supercars chief executive James Warburton is expected to announce the deal on Wednesday, which was negotiated with the NSW government and reportedly worth $12 million to the sport and an estimated $50 million to the state’s economy.

The three-day event may include twilight racing, which has been floated as an idea to attract more television viewers.

Ford, Holden, Nissan and Mercedes-Benz will battle for the first time at the Sydney circuit this year between December 6-8.
