Van Gisbergen misses Supercars shootout

Triple Eight gun Shane van Gisbergen has failed to make the Newcastle 500 top 10 shootout on Sunday, after winning race one a day earlier.

It all but ends the Supercars teams’ championship race after DJR Team Penske duo Scott McLaughlin and Fabian Coulthard both made the shootout.

Supercars champion McLaughlin now looks set to complete the double as DJR Team Penske hold a 143-point lead over Triple Eight in the teams’ title race.

There are still 288 points up for grabs in the final race of the season on Sunday afternoon but Triple Eight will only have Jamie Whincup starting in the top 10.

Cam Waters qualified fastest for the shootout ahead of Whincup, McLaughlin, Coulthard, Tim Slade, Anton de Pasquale, James Courtney, Dave Reynolds, Scott Pye and Lee Holdsworth.

Van Gisbergen made a mistake on his final lap to be 18th in qualifying.

The shootout, which commences at 1320 AEDT, will decide the top 10 grid positions.
