Webber urges Hamilton to regain F1 focus

Mark Webber has urged controversial Formula One rival Lewis Hamilton to “look in the mirror” to regain his best form.

Hamilton was involved in a series of wild on-track incidents last year and several distractions in his private life.

But Webber has identified the 2008 world champion – who says he is now in a relaxed and positive state of mind – as a threat this season.

“He was involved in more incidents than he would have liked but he’s clearly gifted behind the wheel,” Webber said ahead of next weekend’s season-opening Australian Grand Prix.

“It’s normal for a sportsman or woman to go through some headwinds in their career – particularly someone like him who had so much success so early.

“And he’s black, and he’s got interest, and he’s got a girlfriend of profile.

“This is of interest to a lot of people and it needs managing.”

Hamilton had an on-off relationship with pop singer Nicole Scherzinger, a situation blamed for his troubles behind the wheel.

But the Briton has revealed he now feels better prepared than at any other time in his career.

McLaren has emerged as a major threat with Red Bull boss christian Horner pinpointing Hamilton’s teammate Jenson Button as their main rival.

Hamilton says he is optimistic about McLaren’s chances after a smooth pre-season test period.

“I actually feel more relaxed and ready for the new season than I think I’ve ever done,” Hamilton said.

“Everything has gone smoothly with the car – which is more than we can say for last year – and it just seems to be a responsive and reliable package.

“My final day in the car – with the aero package we plan to run next weekend – also felt good. The car was a useful step forward.”

Hamilton said he was more focused on the season than winning first up at Albert Park.

“That might sound like we’re aiming low – we’re not – but, at this time of year, it’s good to remember that it’s going to be a very long season,” he said.

“I’d love to win in Melbourne, sure, but there are 19 races afterwards, so it’ll be important to get some points on the board.”
