South Sydney’s historic form has even Wayne Bennett cracking a smile but the master coach’s poker face is back ahead of Saturday’s NRL semi-final against Parramatta.

The Rabbitohs trounced the Eels 38-0 in round 16 and on the back of historic attacking form will go in as favourites despite finishing three spots lower in sixth in the regular season.

Their 349 points since round 12 is the most the club has amassed over a 10-week period, 106 of those coming in the last fortnight alone.

It’s allowed Bennett to kick back in the coach’s box in what is usually a tense time of year, but the seven-time NRL title-winning mentor isn’t getting ahead of himself.

“I’d be fooling myself if I said I wasn’t surprised by the margins of those games,” he said.

“But we’re sticking to a plan and when we get it right we can play a bit of football.

“That’s what you want as a coach; it’s not that we’ve been perfect for 80 minutes, but we’ve been very good in periods and it’s not something you take for granted that will happen every week.

“Every game’s different; they’ll all get harder and tougher now so I don’t know what we can expect this weekend and that’s what we watch it for.”

In-form hooker Damien Cook has been central to the side’s flow of points, breaking the game open with his darts from dummy-half against Newcastle in last week’s finals victory.

“We backed up what we did against the Roosters but we’re definitely expecting a different game to last time we played Parramatta that’s for sure,” he said.

“They’ve got a great forward pack, going to have to make sure match them before we can get on the front foot.”
