Bird wins Titans’ end of year prize

NSW State of Origin star Greg Bird has won the Paul Broughton Medal as Gold Coast’s best player in the 2013 NRL season.

The Titans’ co-captain won the award by four points from Jamal Idris while Albert Kelly and Ashley Harrison finished equal-third on 12 points.

It’s the first time Bird has won the award since moving to the Titans in 2010.

Idris overtook Bird in the count thanks to his fine mid-season form but the broken leg which forced him to miss the final nine games of the season allowed Bird to pick up enough points to win the award.

Bird’s win come just weeks after he was awarded the Brad Fittler Medal as NSW’s best player during this year’s Origin series.

It wasn’t the only win for Bird at the Titans’ awards dinner, also claiming the members’ most valuable player award.

Kelly, who joined the Titans during the off-season and enjoyed a fine first season with the Gold Coast, won the try of the year award while winger Anthony Don picked up the rookie of the year prize.
