Brigginshaw leads Broncos to NRLW win

Brisbane have all but qualified for their second-successive NRLW grand final after trouncing the Sydney Roosters 20-0.

The Broncos dominated what was a re-match of last year’s final, putting a sloppy and wasteful tri-colours to the sword on Saturday at AAMI Park.

It leaves the Roosters’ season on life support and they will be knocked out of contention if the Warriors beat St George Illawarra on Sunday.

The Broncos remain undefeated, having won all four games on their way to last year’s title and opening their account with two victories in 2019.

They would need to lose to the Warriors next week and have results run against them to miss out on this year’s decider.

After thumping the Roosters 34-12 in last year’s grand final, the Broncos again appear to be the team to beat in 2019 despite a big player turnover in the off-season.

Halfback Ali Brigginshaw orchestrated the rout, setting up Annette Brander’s opening try before putting the icing on the cake in the second half with a chip-and-chase solo try.

Her kicking game was also hugely influential in wet and difficult conditions, pinning the Roosters down their own end for long periods.

She finished the game off the field with ice on her right leg.

Prop Millie Boyle was also immense, running for 113 metres, while Roosters starting front-rowers Ruan Sims (16m) and Vanessa Foliaki (6m) had just two and one runs respectively.

The Roosters’ day was summed up when Amber Pilley strolled through some soft defence to make it 10-0 after 10 minutes.

They were their own worst enemies in the first half, not completing their first set until the 20-minute mark.

They picked up where they left off after the break with winger Kiana Takairangi allowing the kickoff to trickle into touch.

And from the next set, lock Rona Peters crossed to effectively seal the result.
