Brisbane Broncos vs Cronulla Sharks Preview

A pair of premiership hopefuls with significant Origin loads and a point to prove lock horns in a Saturday night blockbuster.

The fifth-placed Brisbane Broncos are striving to keep pace with the competition front-runners in a campaign pitted with big-name injury setbacks.

Their bid for three straight wins was stunningly thwarted by Gold Coast in a 36-34 home loss in Round 12.

Origin quartet Pat Carrigan, Selwyn Cobbo, Reece Walsh and Payne Haas are named to back up for the Broncos, while Kotoni Staggs is back from injury.

After making big statements with consecutive wins over Melbourne and Sydney Roosters, the air has gone out of Cronulla’s title contention balloon courtesy of dismal back-to-back losses to depleted Penrith (42-0) and struggling Parramatta (34-22), surrendering the ladder lead in the process.

Hynes succumbed to injury during the first half against the Panthers, and the Sharks have struggled to find the poise that marked their win in Melbourne without their linchpin, but the defensive drop-off has been even more alarming.

Cameron McInnes has been named to back up from his NSW debut but Nicho Hynes will be rested.

Teig Wilton has been ruled out and replaced by Siosifa Talakai, while Tuku Hau Tapuha comes onto the bench for Braden Hamlin-Uele.

The Broncos have won nine of their last 11 against the Sharks (and their last four at Cronulla) including gritty wins last season at home (16-7) and away (20-12) with the latter three days after the Origin series opener.

Brisbane is a far less reliable proposition with Adam Reynolds sidelined, but Hynes’ guaranteed absence tips the scales significantly the way of the home side – pending Haas and Carrigan, in particular, being OK to back up.
