Brisbane ready to lift for NRLW decider

It was the loss defending NRLW champions Brisbane had to have.

At least that is what Broncos skipper Ali Brigginshaw reckons, claiming their historic last round defeat to the Warriors has inspired her side to seal back-to-back premierships on Sunday.

Reigning champions Brisbane’s unbeaten six-game run came to a shuddering halt when they fell short 10-8 to the New Zealand outfit at the SCG last weekend.

It may not have appeared to be the best preparation for a Broncos side looking to defend their title against arch-rival St George Illawarra in Sunday’s season decider.

But Brigginshaw reckoned it was just what her side needed as they prepared to go back to back.

“That loss against the Warriors, it was a reality check. They came out with a lot of passion and they wanted to win it so much more but I think it has lit a fire in us to go out on grand final day and really want that win,” Brigginshaw said.

“After that loss we have come together even stronger, it has given us this fire to go out and not give the Dragons any sniff to win a premiership.”

While Brisbane went through last year’s inaugural NRLW campaign undefeated, the Dragons emerged as early 2019 title favourites after recruiting five Broncos in the off-season including reigning Dally M Medallist, hooker Brittany Breayley.

But Test playmaker Brigginshaw said the Broncos would take confidence from their opening round 14-4 win over the highly fancied Dragons at Bankwest Stadium ahead of the season decider.

“I didn’t think we would go through to the final with the expectations of the Dragons,” Brigginshaw said.

“Everyone was talking about them knocking us over early.

“But once we beat them it gave us confidence for the rest of the season.

“I think now we have a good rivalry (with Dragons). It gets you up ready for a game.

“And if they have worn that Broncos jersey before there is a little bit extra there.”
