Brisbane’s Boyd blinkered to NRL critics

Darius Boyd has no plans for an early retirement, insisting he’s comfortable with his form while baulking at claims Brisbane coach Anthony Seibold needs to put more heat on the players.

Question marks over the captain’s longevity at fullback have been exacerbated this season given he will be 34 when his current NRL deal expires in more than two years.

A long-time performer at the back and on the wing for Queensland and Australia, Boyd’s defence in particular has come under fire during the side’s 2-6 season.

He was late to the scene or didn’t do enough when he got there as South Sydney star Cody Walker scored two first-half tries in the side’s humbling defeat last Thursday.

“I think my body’s really good and my form I’m pretty happy with to be honest as well,” he said at Fox League’s NRL Magic Round launch.

“There’s been bit of talk about defence and different things, but I genuinely believe if we hold the ball well as a team a lot of us will pick up our performances.”

Boyd sat down with Seibold to dissect his own performance this week and left confident that his coach was satisfied.

Centre James Roberts and Jamayne Isaako don’t appear to have been so lucky after the pair trained with the reserves at Monday in an indication they’ll be dropped for Friday’s Magic Round clash with Manly.

Gorden Tallis on Tuesday said the club still had the roster to win a title – he believes they will still play finals this year – but suggested Seibold needed to make players more accountable.

“Instead of running out stats, saying they were good at this, good at that and protecting the players (Seibold should) out them every now and then,” he said.

“One thing I didn’t like was having your name in the paper (if you weren’t playing well).”

But Boyd said that wasn’t the answer.

“To play for the Broncos is a big thing and we understand that it does come with expectations, but at the same time I don’t think bashing these young ones in particular is going to help them play better,” he said.

“There’s been a lot of talk about mental health over the years … we know we need to be better and improve and we’re not happy with the start we’ve had.”
