Brisbane skipper Patrick Carrigan says his NRL club needs a “strong head” as the new coach as they look to rebuild to their former glory days.

Queensland Origin coach Kevin Walters and ex-Cowboys mentor Paul Green are favourites for the high-profile post that was vacated by Anthony Seibold on Wednesday, ending months of turmoil.

Carrigan said there was no sense of relief amongst players that Seibold had finally fallen on his sword, although he did take comfort that the relentless pressure was now off the coach and his family.

Ahead of their Friday night NRL clash with the Sydney Roosters at the SCG, Carrigan said he didn’t have a preference for who should get the job but outlined some of the necessary qualities.

“I’m paid to pay footy and I’m happy with whoever gets the job at the club, whether it’s Kevvie, Paul or whoever comes in,” Carrigan said on Thursday.

“As a group we probably need a pretty strong head to lead us moving forward.

“We’ve got to be honest with where we are at and I think the testament of a playing group is when you know you can criticise each other for the right reasons and you don’t get defensive.

“Whoever the coach is I know he will be able to provide that guidance.”

The 22-year-old lock said regardless of who came in the players needed to take ownership as they look to improve on a dismal season that’s only yielded three wins from 15 games.

I’m a big believer that as a playing group we determine how we go each week and the result we put forward,” Carrigan said.

“We’re out of the finals race but hopefully we can grab a few wins at the back end of the year and toss up something that we are proud of and also our members and fans are proud of.

“It’s been a big 24 hours for the club but there’s a good feeling.

“We’re going up against the back-to-back premiers so as a playing group we’re pretty focused on that.”
