If Brisbane win a second straight NRLW title, veteran prop Steph Hancock admits she will probably announce her retirement.
But Hancock reckons that will only be the celebratory rum talking.
At 37, decorated Test and Queensland forward Hancock is tempted to follow the lead of fellow Jillaroos legend Ruan Sims, who this week confirmed she would hang up her boots at the end of the Sydney Roosters’ 2019 NRLW season.
It wouldn’t be the first time Hancock has contemplated retirement, announcing her playing days were over not once but three times in recent years, only to return to the field better than ever.
Another perfect opportunity to farewell the game looms for Hancock, with undefeated reigning champions Brisbane on the brink of qualifying for a second straight NRLW grand final.
They would need to suffer a historic first loss when they line up against the Warriors on Saturday at the SCG and have results go against them to miss out on this year’s decider.
While Hancock admits she will get sentimental if the Broncos extend their winning run and claim a second title, the prop reckons she isn’t going anywhere now the NRLW is flourishing.
“(The NRLW) has refreshed me, to be honest,” Hancock said.
“I think I have announced my retirement the last three years and I will probably do it Mad Monday, have a few Bundies and then tell all the girls that I don’t remember saying it.
“I am having so much fun and I will keep going until my old body says not to – it is a breath of fresh air to see the younger generation coming through.”
Not that Hancock was taking anything for granted ahead of their Warriors clash.
“We haven’t really spoken much about next weekend (grand final),” she said.
“Our focus is the Warriors. We will get tomorrow night out of the way and hopefully discuss making the grand final if it happens.”
Brisbane beat the Warriors 32-10 in their 2018 meeting but will meet a desperate New Zealand outfit on Saturday after their plans to book a grand final berth were sabotaged by last week’s 26-6 loss to St George Illawarra.
The Warriors are now looking to spring an upset to stay in the grand final mix.
Victory would put the Kiwi outfit on two wins along with Brisbane and potentially the in-form Dragons, who take on the Sydney Roosters at Leichhardt Oval on Sunday.
If the Warriors and Dragons are successful, points differential look set to determine the 2019 grand finalists.
