Broncos winger needed ‘kick up backside’

Brisbane winger Corey Oates has no issue with coach Anthony Seibold’s “kick up the backside” earlier this month, saying his poor NRL form justified the reality check.

Seibold admitted earlier this month he had to give Oates a rev up following disappointing displays against Parramatta and Newcastle during the State of Origin period.

The Queensland representative admits he was below-par for those games but after recovering from the Origin series he feels like he’s getting back to his best.

“He just said the Origin period got me a little bit,” Oates said.

“I can’t disagree. I don’t think they were my best games in that time.

“His decision was to give me the week off and rest a few little injuries and a bit of soreness. I’m not going to argue with it.

“I feel like I’ve felt a lot better after it.”

Oates scored a 90m intercept try and ran for over 200 metres in last Saturday’s 34-12 win over Gold Coast at Cbus Super Stadium.

It means the 24-year-old now has 13 tries in 2019 to be just one behind Warriors star Ken Maumalo and Parramatta winger Maika Sivo on this season’s top tryscorer’s list.

Oates believes his best form is yet to come as he prepares for a clash with table-topping Melbourne on Friday at Suncorp Stadium.

“It’s been a good couple of weeks but I still know there’s a lot more improvement in my game going forward,” he said.

“I’m just going to be doing more and more each week.”
