Canberra could be back to full fitness for their highly-anticipated top-three NRL clash against the Sydney Roosters on Sunday.
Raiders centre Joey Leilua is eyeing an early comeback from a neck injury which has kept him sidelined for 14 weeks, but teammate Aidan Sezer expects the club to show caution.
Coach Ricky Stuart said Leilua will be named in the squad this week, alongside winger Nick Cotric who returns from a three-game suspension.
But Sezer wants to the reigning Dally M centre of the year returning at 100 per cent fitness to ensure Leilua is there for finals.
“Everyone knows BJ’s influence on that right edge, he’s one of the best centres in the game and it will be a great inclusion if he’s fit, but I think the club won’t want to rush him back. They’ll want to get him 100 per cent right,” Sezer said.
“He started training with the boys a few weeks ago now and is back on the field doing footy things, but we’ve got to look after his welfare and make sure he’s 100 per cent right to go.”
Canberra has won seven of their past eight games but haven’t beaten a top-three side this season. They face the second-placed Roosters and ladder-leaders Melbourne Storm over the next fortnight.
“They (Roosters) are the reigning premiers and we’ve seen what they did on the weekend against the Titans, they’re going to come down here full of energy and full of confidence,” Sezer said.
“They’ve got a stacked team full of great players. These are the games we want to play in. It’s a big couple of weeks going ahead for us to see where the club sits.”
Raiders enforcer and former Rooster Sia Soliola said it was the biggest game in Canberra since the 2016 preliminary final.
“They’ll be coming in with a lot of confidence. They’ll be really amped for this match, and I daresay, there will be a lot of guys really looking at this one…as one of our benchmarks leading into a really tough five games,” Soliola said.
