Out-of-favour Wests Tigers playmaker Josh Reynolds has overcome a bout of nerves and self-doubt to complete his first full game in almost a year.
Reynolds scored two tries and set up four in a reserve grade rout for Western Suburbs Magpies on Sunday, but it may not be enough to force his way back into first grade.
Tigers veteran Robbie Farah again wound back the clock to help maintain the joint-venture club’s unbeaten to the season in a 34-6 hammering of the Warriors on Sunday.
And that is likely to leave the former NSW five-eighth, who signed a reported $3 million four-year deal from Canterbury two years ago, languishing in the Canterbury Cup.
“It was good to see him have a run,” said Tigers coach Michael Maguire.
“He mentioned to me it was the first time he actually played a full game since round five last year.
“It’s what I’ve been saying all along. He just needs to get out and enjoy his football and play. He had some special moments in that game.”
Pressed on whether Reynolds could force his way into a bench role, Maguire said he would assess his options during the week.
“Obviously off a performance like that, we’d have to assess where we’re at. But I was very pleased with the 17 that stepped out tonight,” he said.
Reynolds admitted Maguire spoke to him about addressing some flaws in his defensive technique, particularly in his wrestle.
And while he wasn’t seriously tested in that department on Sunday, the former Blues star was merely pleased to come through unscathed.
He revealed copping criticism from certain sections at Campbelltown Stadium, but expressed frustration at not being allowed to produce his best football.
“I see where they’re coming from. I come over here and haven’t even played a game yet,” Reynolds said.
“I know I’m playing premier league, but in the end, it’s not up to me. I’ve just got to strap my boots on every week and do the best I can.
“That’s what I’m going to do. I’m not going to carry on. I’m just going to play footy and if my time comes, I’ll be ready to go.”
