Doyle quits NRL for Warriors CEO gig

NRL chief operating officer Jim Doyle will quit his post at the end of the season to take up the role of Warriors CEO.

The club on Tuesday announced its current chief executive Wayne Scurrah will step down and be replaced by Doyle on November 10.

Warriors chairman Bill Wavish said Scurrah, who joined the club in November 2005, had indicated “some weeks ago” his intention to resign.

“Jim Doyle was approached and we are thrilled that he has signed a contract to be the next Warriors chief executive officer,” Wavish said in a statement.

Doyle was previously boss of New Zealand Rugby League, a position he left at the end of 2012 before joining the NRL. He currently heads up the league’s Integrity Unit.

The former businessman said he and his wife were keen to return home to New Zealand to spend more time with his two daughters.

“I have to admit that my wife and I are a little homesick for New Zealand and are missing our time with our daughters who live there,” he said in a statement.

“When the opportunity arose to join the Warriors as their next CEO, I knew it was the right decision for our family.

“It means we can return home but also stay within the rugby league community, which is a major part of our lives and the sport that both my wife and I are passionate about.

“I am sure the next stage will be exciting and challenging, and I am committed to seeing us lift the bar even higher on and off the field.”

NRL CEO Dave Smith praised Doyle for his achievements, particularly his efforts in establishing the league’s Integrity Unit and the management of the ASADA probe.

“It is important for the NRL that people of Jim’s caliber are part of the game as the NRL drives further changes to club governance and standards in line with being a major sporting administration,” he said.

Smith said it will be “business-as-usual” for the rest of 2014 at the NRL, as it searches for a replacement.
