Eels re-sign Ben Smith

Parramatta received a boost ahead of their NRL match against Canberra on Sunday with injured forward Ben Smith committing to the club for a further two seasons.

The 27-year old has been a consistent performer for the club since making his NRL debut against Melbourne Storm in 2004, and is seen as an important part of coach Stephen Kearney’s plans going forward.

“I love the club and I’ve been here my whole career, so I’ve got some great memories growing up playing footy here, but what I’m most excited about are the next couple of years,” said Smith, who is out injured with a pectoral muscle injury.

“I wouldn’t be re-signing if I didn’t believe in what Steve is doing and the plan we’ve got.”

After a horror start to 2012 which has seen bottom-placed Parramatta record just one victory from their opening nine matches, Smith is confident his teammates will soon turn the corner.

“We are all frustrated with our start to the season but I know we’ll come out the other end a better side, and I’m really looking forward to it,” he said.

Kearney was pleased with Smith’s decision to re-sign.

“He’s a huge part of the culture were building here and that’s thanks to his positive attitude and his work ethic,” Kearney said.

“On and off the field he is someone our guys look up to and his presence has a big effect on the group – his leadership is a major part of what makes him such a valuable player.”

Eels veteran Luke Burt will play his 250th NRL match for the club in Sunday’s clash at Canberra Stadium.
