Experienced DCE ready to lead Qld: Hasler

Manly’s Daly Cherry-Evans has all the experience he needs to lead Queensland into a new era, according to NRL club coach Des Hasler.

Cherry-Evans is widely considered the frontrunner to lead the Maroons into this year’s State of Origin series after the retirement of Greg Inglis.

The Manly skipper has emerged as one of the form players of the NRL after steering the club to a three-game winning streak.

Ahead of Saturday’s clash against a similarly hot St George Illawarra side, Hasler warned his star halfback could get even better.

“He’s been performing really well, Cherry. He’s had to step up and when he’s been required to step up, he does that,” Hasler said.

“We know that he can do better. It’s about that for this side, where they are with their development. We want to keep improving.

“We relish the challenge tomorrow against a formidable side in the Dragons.”

While some may consider Cherry-Evans’ likely ascension to Maroons captaincy as a surprise, Hasler pointed to the 30-year-old’s experience.

Not only was he part of the Sea Eagles’ 2011 NRL premiership win, but he is also the incumbent Kangaroos halfback with 13 Tests.

“He’s been part of the Origin structure for Queensland,” Hasler said.

“He’s had some great grounding (from) players that have played before who he would’ve learned from. He understands what the Maroon culture is all about.

“He’s used to big games, he’s played in plenty of big games. Cherry himself brings a lot of experience as well, don’t underestimate that.”

Saturday’s match at WIN Stadium also marks the 100th game for another Kangaroos representative in forward Jake Trbojevic.

“He’s a great player, there’s no doubt about it… Whether it’s 100, 150, 200, 300, you know exactly what you’re going to get from Jake,” Hasler said.
