Ford boss unsure about Mustangs at Winton

A lack of testing at Winton Motor Raceway has Tickford Racing boss Tim Edwards unsure how his team’s Ford Mustangs will perform at this weekend’s Supercars event.

Tickford has won six races at the central Victorian track but its last victory came via Chaz Mostert in 2015.

Despite the dominance of the Mustang this year, Edwards says Winton looms as a bit of an unknown for his team.

“It’s a bit of an unconventional lead-in for us, having not run the Mustang at Winton, having not been there at all in eight months, but it’s not necessarily negative,” he said.

“It’s been no different at pretty much every other track so far and we’ve been pretty strong, and we’re optimistic of a good weekend.

“With the condensed schedule it’ll be key to roll out well, but we’re confident we’ll be up to the task and can come out of the weekend with some good results.”

Mostert, sitting fifth in the championship, is the only driver apart from DJR Team Penske duo Scott McLaughlin and Fabian Coulthard and Holden’s Shane Van Gisbergen to win a race in 2019.

The 27-year-old finished third in the first race of the most recent event in Perth earlier this month but failed to finish the second race of that weekend.

Apart from his 2015 victory, Mostert has won four pole positions at Winton and was hopeful of further success this weekend.

“Perth didn’t go quite to plan for us with a DNF in the last race, but it was good to have some good car speed across the weekend,” Mostert said.

“I’m looking forward to getting to Winton, hopefully we can have a balance out of the gate and really apply it to try and get another trophy and keep the trot alive.”
