George won’t see end of Burgess dynasty

George Burgess won’t let himself think about whether next week will be the last time he pulls on a South Sydney jersey with his brothers Tom and Sam.

Because in his world, it won’t be.

Headed back to the English Super League with Wigan at the end of the season, George is now in the position where his next loss will be his last with the Rabbitohs.

With that, an era will end at the Bunnies.

George, Sam and Tom have lined up 77 times together in Rabbitohs colours. Six of those occasions also included fourth brother Luke.

“For us it’s not the last time (this Friday),” George said.

“We want to keep moving forward. We’re not thinking about this week being the last one.

“It’s another week for me. I’ve just got to focus on my job: Getting out there and performing at my best.”

The Burgess trio have not played together since round 13, with all three battling injuries and suspensions.

Sam missed Friday night’s 30-6 pummelling at the hands of the Sydney Roosters through suspension for a hair pull, with George adamant it shouldn’t have warranted a finals ban.

Tom also only came back early from a knee injury for the loss, after it had threatened to end his season.

George meanwhile has had a disappointing final year in the NRL, starting the season on the sidelines from an eye gouge ban and then missing nine weeks from the same issue.

But the 27-year-old said he would not be driven by a desire to make it up to his teammates in the finals series.

“You’ve just got to not think about it too much otherwise you’ll drive yourself crazy,” he said.

“You’ve just got to do what you need to do and make sure you’re right to go when you get the chance.

“You get thrown curve balls in your career. You’ve just got to do your best to work through them.

“It’s just an experience. It builds the experience and character of your career.”
