Gold Coast Titans vs New Zealand Warriors Preview

Gold Coast Titans are aiming to climb back off the bottom of the table, but the visiting Warriors will be equally desperate for a win as they strive to stay in touch with the Top 8.

The Titans went into the Round 13 bye off a stunning upset of the Broncos, but they have been awful since the break, thrashed 46-12 by Souths at home and going down to battling Wests Tigers 18-10 in Sydney last week – after scoring 20-plus points for eight games in a row.

Moeaki Fotuaika is with the Queensland team, but David Fifita returns, Klese Haas is out, while Joe Stimson and Iszac Fa’asuamaleaui are the bench additions.

The 6-1-7 Warriors blew another handy lead at home last weekend to bogey team Melbourne, watching a 14-0 advantage descend into a 20-14 halftime deficit.

After getting momentum back early in the second half, two sin-binnings saw them crash to a 38-24 defeat.

The Warriors lose Mitch Barnett and Kurt Capewell to Origin duty, Dallin Watene-Zelezniak to suspension and Rocco Berry to injury.

Roger Tuivasa-Sheck returns at centre, Ed Kosi gets a run on the wing, Dylan Walker moves to the second-row, and Tom Ale and Jacob Laban join the bench.

After losing 16 of the teams’ 18 clashes from 2011-19 (including eight straight at Cbus Super Stadium), the Titans have won five of their last seven against the Warriors.

The Warriors outlasted a plucky, 12-man Titans 28-18 on the Gold Coast in Round 23 last year, but the Titans came back from 12-0 down to pull off a 27-24 Anzac Day boilover at Mt Smart two months ago. where the currently-injured AJ Brimson was the star of the show that afternoon.

The Warriors’ pack has been dominant, though Barnett is a big out.

The key for the visitors is getting the right halves balance between Te Maire Martin and Shaun Johnson – they didn’t gel particularly well last week.

The Titans have a speed advantage out wide – a key component of their Anzac Day upset – but at this stage the Warriors deserve their $1.53 favouritism.
