Gold Coast Titans vs St. George Illawarra Dragons Preview
Gold Coast and St George Illawarra, both finishing in the bottom four in 2023, are gearing up for the new season under the guidance of new premiership-winning coaches who are making a return to the NRL head coaching scene after some time away.
The Titans had more positives to take away from last season, winning nine games and introducing exciting talent like wing rookie Alofiana Khan-Pereira, while the addition of Kieran Foran bolstered their lineup behind a pack stacked with representative players.
On the other hand, the Dragons endured a tumultuous season, sacking their coach midyear and managing only five wins with a lackluster roster.
Under new coach Shane Flanagan, significant changes have been made to the Dragons lineup, including Kyle Flanagan partnering with Ben Hunt in the halves, Zac Lomax moving to the wing, and Tom Eisenhuth and Raymond Faitala-Mariner joining as forward recruits, along with debutant Viliami Fifita.
With Jayden Campbell sidelined due to injury, coach Des Hasler has named Keano Kini at fullback, allowing AJ Brimson to transition to his new role at center. Although David Fifita is absent, the return of Beau Fermor from injury and the inclusion of ex-Bronco Keenan Palasia at lock add depth to the Titans squad.
In their recent encounters, the Titans have had the upper hand, winning four of their last six matches against the Dragons, including the last three in Queensland. The teams split their matchups last season, with the Dragons securing a 32-18 victory at home in Round 2 and the Titans responding with a 20-18 win on the Gold Coast in Round 6.
While Flanagan and Hasler are expected to bring a tougher approach to their respective teams, it may take time for their coaching philosophies to fully integrate. The Dragons struggled on the road last season, going winless in 12 away games, while the Titans showed promise with a 5-6 record at home and consistently competitive performances.
With a strong middle third providing a platform for their speedy backline, the Titans are poised to capitalize on their home advantage in what promises to be an intriguing matchup.
