Gutherson to lead Walker defence from back

Clint Gutherson will be charged with the job of shutting down Cody Walker on Saturday night as Parramatta prepare for one of the NRL’s most dangerous men.

Walker will enter Saturday night’s semi-final as arguably the form player of the competition, with the South Sydney five-eighth having had a hand in 10 tries in the past two weeks alone.

He also taught the Eels a lesson just six weeks ago, having a blinder in the Rabbitohs’ 38-0 demolition of Parramatta in round 16.

Most notable has been the way Walker has threatened on both sides of the ruck in recent months, roaming away from his normal left edge.

The 30-year-old has scored four times himself on the right in the past six weeks, while regularly creating more numbers there for for the outside men to cross.

And that is where Gutherson will be key, lasering in on Walker and controlling the Eels defence from the back.

“It’s my job to get the defensive line set and get the numbers right on the right side of the field, how many people are there,” Gutherson said.

“He’s been great. He just plays footy. He goes out there and plays what he sees and that’s the hardest thing to defend when you are trying to prepare for him.

“He has shown in the past month of footy how good he is. We’ve just got to go out there and do our best to defend it.”

The importance of Gutherson’s role was spoken about at Parramatta on Tuesday, while their edges will also be wary not to give Walker space.

Souths have scored 349 points in the past 10 weeks alone, easily the most of any of the remaining teams in what is already proving to be a high-scoring finals series.

“You just have to give him no time,” Ryan Matterson, who will patrol Walker’s regular edge, said.

“When you give him too much space he can dictate to the defence what he wants to do and they can just pick edges apart.

“They’re really skilful in the way they get their backline moves, their passes are all out in front.

“You just have to nullify Cody Walker by not giving him much space.

“Gutho is going to do a good job in trying to organise the defensive line based on what they are doing … he is going to do a good job.”
