Haas completes Ramadan before Origin debut

After completing Ramadan and a month of solemn fasting from sunrise to sunset, NSW teen giant Payne Haas has declared himself steeled and ready for the State of Origin pressure cooker.

For the first week of his first Blues camp, the towering Brisbane prop was unable to eat and drink during daylight hours because of his observance of the Islamic holy month.

During and after each training session, his teammates would sip on water or protein shakes to refuel their bodies however the Blues debutant was unable to let anything touch his lips.

He was finally able to break his fast on Monday and said the experiences left him relieved and spiritually fulfilled.

“It was a crazy month, it was a blessed month. It meant a lot to me and I’m so happy I got through it,” Haas said.

“I think it does take a lot of discipline but I don’t think it’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done, I’ve gone through stuff in my life, I found it pretty easy.

“It taught me just be grateful for what you’ve got. There’s kids in the Middle East that hardly get to eat for a few months. I can last for a month. I took gratitude out of it. I’m grateful for every day I live.”

Haas said he planned to have a cheat meal on Thursday with his family.

“I ate a bit (after breaking his fast) but I can’t be eating too much. I have a game tomorrow to worry about. On Thursday I’ll be having a big feed with the family,” Haas said.

“Probably a mango sorbet. I probably won’t eat the whole thing, I’ve got a game (Brisbane’s NRL clash with the Gold Coast) on Sunday.”

Haas said he felt mentally prepared for Origin after front-row teammates David Klemmer and Paul Vaughan took him under their wing.

” I’ve just learned this Origin game you have to take your medicine and you’ve got to be mentally strong,” Haas said.

“Queensland will try to break you, whoever is mentally strongest is going to win this series.”
