High-profile NRL scalp no shock for DCE

Manly’s resurgence may be a surprise to many but not to skipper Daly Cherry-Evans.

The Sea Eagles are nudging the NRL top four and made a statement about their premiership ambitions last round with a golden-point win over front-runners Melbourne.

It’s in stark contrast to the same time last season under Trent Barrett.

After 19 rounds the Sea Eagles were in turmoil, sitting 13th on the back of five losses from their previous six games and eventually finished second last with Barrett making way for the return of Des Hasler.

They only managed seven wins for the season and had the worst defensive record in the competition.

Cherry-Evans said the result against Melbourne – their fifth win from their past six games – didn’t surprise him.

‘I’ve always had a lot of belief in the team and where we can go this year and maybe everyone else is starting to see that now,” Cherry-Evans said on Tuesday.

“We’re just trying to keep our head down and keep winning footy games”.

The victory over the competition leaders has the buzz growing around the Sea Eagles but the halfback said they would keep a lid on things.

“Have you seen who our coach is? Des will find a way to stay under the radar,” Cherry-Evans laughed.

After thumping Melbourne to win the 2008 premiership, Hasler also won the 2011 title in his last year with Manly before switching to the Bulldogs.

With steely defence from their hard-hitting forwards and Cherry-Evans marshalling the troops, the Sea Eagles are playing with confidence.

Youngsters such as Reuben Garrick, Morgan Boyle and Moses Suli have flourished under Hasler’s firm hand.

While stars such as Trbojevic brothers Tom and Jake have always shone, Cherry-Evans said lesser lights were making the difference this season.

He named second-rowers Curtis Sironen and Joel Thompson as two played who had stepped up.

But Cherry-Evans said there was still plenty of work to do.

“We haven’t moved up the ladder so we have to keep working,” he said.

“There’s always things to improve on – we need to keep perspective as it’s a long year so so we have to keep worrying about what’s coming.”
