Hunt, Norman to battle for No.6 all year?

Young hopefuls Corey Norman and Ben Hunt could be in a season-long battle for Darren Lockyer’s prized No.6 jumper with neither proving a standout choice at this stage.

The pair, who split NRL trial time against the Cowboys and Titans, will get another chance to impress coach Anthony Griffin in Saturday night’s final pre-season hit-out against a strong Melbourne side in Hobart.

Griffin will name his travel squad on Tuesday with Norman likely to start the trial at No.6.

But it’s looking more like there will be no immediate successor to champion playmaker Lockyer, the two hopefuls more likely to share the job until one steps up and claims it permanently.

“Everyone is wanting us to come up with a solution that’s going to solve this big perceived problem we’ve got.. the problem that we don’t see we’ve got,” Griffin told AAP.

“There might not be an immediate successor to Locky who grabs that position and keeps it as their own.”

While Norman and Hunt have shown promise, neither has really taken control or dominated at five-eighth to suggest the position should be theirs.

“They might interchange for the next six months …. I think everyone else is worrying about a lot more than what we are,” he said.

“As long as they’re both competing well and playing to their best, that’s all we need to happen.

On the injury front, lock Corey Parker has dismissed concerns about a hamstring twinge that forced him from the field early against the Titans.

“Corey (Parker) has pulled up really well this morning (Monday),” said Griffin.

“He’s half trying to get on the plane to Hobart this weekend.

“He’ll be a certain starter for round one.”

The club also received some good news with young forward Dunamis Lui cleared of a serious elbow injury.

“There’s no fracture or major issue we don’t think and hopefully he’s a two-to-three-week job,” Griffin said.

“I was a little bit concerned about them on Saturday night but they’re both good.”

The injury news was mixed at the Titans with scans confirming hooker Beau Falloon could need surgery after tearing his biceps in the club’s 18-16 trial win over Brisbane on Saturday night.

While the news was not good for Falloon, young flyer Kevin Gordon was cleared of a second serious knee injury.

Scans revealed the grafts he had in the reconstruction last year were stable and the problem was soreness.
