Hunt to play hooker for PM’s XIII

Ben Hunt will be given the chance to press his hooking claims for end-of-season Kangaroos selection after being picked at No.9 for the Prime Minister’s XIII.

Hunt will be one of five Kangaroos representatives to face Fiji next month, with Cronulla co-captain Wade Graham unveiled as skipper on Monday.

Cody Walker and Mitchell Moses have been named in the halves after their career-best seasons for South Sydney and Parramatta, while Clint Gutherson is fullback.

Brisbane youngster Payne Haas could also push his representative claims after being named as a starting prop, while fellow Broncos Thomas Flegler and David Fifita are on an extended bench.

But it is the selection of Hunt at hooker that is most notable by Kangaroos coach Mal Meninga.

The 29-year-old continues to be a halfback at club level for St George Illawarra, but has played at rake or off the bench for Queensland and Australia for the past two years.

“This year’s Prime Minister’s XIII squads focuses on youth and experience,” said Prime Minister Scott Morison, who picked the team with Meninga.

“I wanted to bring together veterans who have served the game well over a number of years with the brightest young talents that have come onto the rugby league scene.”

Retiring Wests Tiger Robbie Farah had earlier been considered for the No.9 jersey, but was unable to play as he continues his recovery from a broken leg.

Players from teams who did not make the grand final were available for selection for the October 11 clash, ahead of Tests against New Zealand and Tonga.

Jillaroos coach Brad Donald also named his squad, with players from the two NRLW grand-final teams also unavailable.

PM’s XIII: Clint Gutherson, Kyle Feldt, Paul Momirovski, Brad Parker, Blake Ferguson, Cody Walker, Mitchell Moses, Paul Vaughan, Ben Hunt, Payne Haas, Wade Graham (capt), Tyson Frizell Jake Trbojevic. Bench: Jai Arrow, Reuben Garrick, David Fifita, Reed Mahoney, Nathan Brown, Thomas Flegler.
