Wests Tigers have confirmed the appointment of Todd Payten and David Kidwell as assistants to Mick Potter as part of a revamped coaching structure for the 2014 NRL season.
In a move which seemingly shapes as Potter’s last chance to impress after surviving calls for his head during a disappointing first season in charge, the Tigers opted against bringing in an experienced mentor to work over the top of the rookie coach.
Suggestions Potter had difficulties communicating with his players emerged midway through the season, around the same time it was revealed star pivot Benji Marshall was contemplating a code switch to rugby union.
Payten, currently guiding the Tigers NYC side he led to last year’s title, and former Kiwi international Kidwell replace outgoing pair Royce Simmons and Steve Georgallis.
With the Tigers in a rebuilding phase with a high emphasis on youth coming through the club, the elevation of 2005 premiership-winning prop Payten to the main squad was seen as a logical step.
The likes of David Nofoaluma and Curtis Sironen and exciting halfback prospect Luke Brooks all worked under Payten.
“Todd has a wealth of playing experience and now a couple of years of NYC coaching under his belt,” Potter said in a statement.
“This is the natural next step in his coaching progression and he will be a valuable addition to our staff at NRL level.”
Kidwell comes to the club after serving as an assistant coach at Melbourne the last three seasons.
Andrew Webster will take over the club’s NYC program having performed the same role with Parramatta this season.
There were also changes to the club’s backroom staff, including the replacement of longtime physio Andrew Leeds.
“It is an exciting time for the club and we believe that we have the right balance to nurture our more experienced players and to bring through many of the young stars seen on display in 2013,” Tigers chief executive Grant Mayer said.
