Leilua declares fitness for NRL decider

Canberra centre Joey Leilua has declared he will be fit for the NRL grand final after running on his injured calf.

Leilua looked unhindered at the Raiders training on Tuesday and while he admitted to some discomfort, he would be right to take on the Sydney Roosters at ANZ Stadium.

“It should be sweet, it was about 70 to 80 per cent,” Leilua said.

“It should be right by Sunday. It felt good to be running again, just that fitness part was a bit hard.”

Leilua limped from the field with a burst blood vessel in last week’s preliminary final win over South Sydney.

Meanwhile the Raiders are confident co-captain Josh Hodgson will play on Sunday despite missing training with a virus.

Hodgson did not attend training on Tuesday, with club officials confirming they didn’t want to risk it spreading to teammates.

The Raiders are preparing for their first grand final since 1994 and face reigning premiers Sydney Roosters at ANZ Stadium.

The Green Machine team will be unchanged heading into the decider after Josh Papalii was cleared of a dangerous tackle charge against South Sydney last week, while Sia Soliola accepted a fine for the same offence.

Roosters co-captain Jake Friend (calf) is racing the clock to return in the grand final after spending 10 weeks on the sideline.

Injuries have restricted Friend to five games this season, allowing Sam Verrills to make the most of his chance as the starting hooker.

Roosters coach Trent Robinson picked Boyd Cordner for the 2013 grand final despite the star forward missing almost two months with an ankle injury leading into the game.
