The sight of Darren Lockyer back kicking field goals at Suncorp Stadium on Wednesday would be enough to warm any long suffering Broncos fan’s heart.
But Brisbane supporters should not be holding their breath for a belated NRL comeback.
Lockyer returned to the scene of his final heroic act for his beloved Broncos on Wednesday – his golden point field goal that knocked St George Illawarra out of the 2011 finals.
Remarkably Lockyer potted over the match-winning 30m kick with a fractured eye socket – an injury that ultimately ensured he never played again for the Broncos in his swansong season.
In what Lockyer hoped would be a good omen ahead of Brisbane’s must-win NRL clash with the Dragons at the same ground on Sunday, he announced on Wednesday the spot where he launched the 2011 field goal would be auctioned for charity.
The turf will be dug up at the end of the year and money raised will go to one of the Broncos’ charity partners.
Lockyer still looked match fit on Wednesday but needed two attempts when he tried to re-enact his match-winning field goal.
Brisbane needed a reliable field goal kicker last round when they were held to a frustrating 18-all draw at Newcastle to remain two wins outside the top eight.
However, Lockyer said the 12th-placed Broncos would have to dig themselves out of trouble if they are to seal a last gasp finals berth this year.
“Their season is still alive. This Sunday will be a tough test for them,” Lockyer said.
“As a player Sunday afternoon was as good as it got and I am sure the guys will be looking forward to not only the atmosphere but also the challenge of keeping their season alive.”
Lockyer admitted he got itchy feet while watching games especially while on the sidelines as a TV commentator.
“The bigger the occasion the more you want to be on the other side of the line,” he said.
“I just keep telling myself I was very fortunate and lucky to have a long career at the Broncos.
“I am quite content with watching the boys go around.”
Lockyer still couldn’t believe his field goal went over two years ago.
“It wasn’t a good looking kick put it that way,” he said.
“Unfortunately it was the last time I played in a Broncos jersey but I guess it was a nice way to exit.”
Lockyer ruled out bidding for the historic piece of turf.
“It’s probably got a shelf life if goes on someone’s wall but if it was in someone’s yard and got some TLC it might last longer – I don’t think it will last long at our house with three young boys,” he laughed.
