New Queensland rugby league hero Ethan Lowe says he doesn’t have anything to prove against his former club this week, as he’s already done that in his memorable Origin debut.
A 2015 premiership-winner with North Queensland, back-rower Lowe played 108 games in six seasons with the Cowboys before being granted an immediate release to join Souths back in February.
Lowe was demoted to the Queensland Cup for part of last season and felt he didn’t fit into the Cowboys plans for 2019 and was happy to grab the chance offered by the Rabbitohs.
He played in a winning Rabbitohs side over the Cowboys in Magic Round in May and was adamant he had nothing to prove on Saturday in his first game back in Townsville on Saturday.
“I feel like if anything I proved my point of what I’m capable of on (last) Wednesday, and that’s where I’m going to leave it,” Lowe said.
Originally the Maroons’ 18th man for last week’s Origin decider, Lowe covered himself in glory after he was promoted to the starting side when Matt Gillett was ruled out.
He played the full 80 minutes, running 90m and making 52 tackles and kicking all four of his shots for goal as well as making a vital charge down that helped level the match.
‘I didn’t think confidence was something I really took out of it. I think I always had the faith and the belief that I was able to do that at that level and now that I’ve been able to prove it,” Lowe said
A sore Lowe was rested from last weekend’s ‘s win over Manly but will be back this weekend.
Souths will again be without inspirational captain and forward leader Sam Burgess.
Lowe said it would need a combined effort to get on top of a Cowboys pack spearheaded by his Maroons teammate Josh McGuire and the formidable Jason Taumalolo.
‘We’re going to have to work as a team to defend them, especially big Jason,” Lowe said.
“He can beat you a lot of ways, go one out on you, so we’re going to have work well together on those two guys especially.”
Lowe copped some stick from his Rabbitohs teammates after his titanic effort in a losing Queensland side but had the perfect riposte to some sledging from halfback Adam Reynolds.
“I just let him know that I’ve kicked more goals than him in Origin, that shuts him up a little bit,” said Lowe, referring to Reynolds’ six points from two Origin appearances for NSW in 2016.
