The first match of round 14 is between the Manly Sea Eagles and the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, kicking off at Brookvale Oval on Friday night at 7.30pm. While Manly are under some pressure at the moment after winning only one game from their last four, they are still 4th on the ladder and will be tough to beat at home. Lyon hails NRL form of Bulldog Hodkinson

Manly skipper Jamie Lyon has pinpointed former teammate Trent Hodkinson as the potential dangerman for his side in Friday’s NRL clash with Canterbury at Brookvale Oval.

Hodkinson has endured an injury-ravaged spell at the Bulldogs since moving from Manly at the start of 2011 and started this season playing in the NSW Cup.

But coach Des Hasler has since restored Hodkinson back into the Bulldogs’ halfback role and Lyon has credited the recent form of the Bulldogs, who have lost just one of their past six games, down to his performances.

“It’s good to see him back, he is a good kid and showed some good signs when he was back here at Manly a few years back,” Lyon said on Thursday.

“It’s good to see him get over a few injuries and he’s getting an opportunity now.”

Hodkinson enjoyed the best form of his short career in his one full season under Hasler at Brookvale in 2010 and Lyon said he can see the work of the two-time premiership-winning coach paying off once again.

“He’s been steering them around well, has a good kicking game and is a good defender,” he said.

“Trent been a big part of their success in the last six weeks.

“Playing under Des he’s only going to get better and hopefully we can contain him.”

The Sea Eagles must back up from the hardest of five-day turnarounds having gone down 18-16 to the Warriors in Auckland on Sunday.

Lyon failed to convert Steve Matai’s late try from the sideline which would have tied the scores and the former NSW centre admits it was a result that was hard to put behind him on the long journey home from across the Tasman.

“It was a tough one to swallow there for a couple of days, that’s for sure,” he said.

“Friday will be another really tough game. Canterbury are always hard to play against.

“We will be coming up against Tony Williams again back here and he is a great competitor and he’ll want to play well here at Brookvale.

“We just have to make sure we close him down – but I am not planning on running at him.”
