Manly Sea Eagles vs Canterbury Bulldogs Preview
Saturday’s triple-header begins with the Manly Sea Eagles and Canterbury Bulldogs squaring off at 4 Pines Park. These teams played two thrillers last season, with both claiming a one-point win. The Round 25 victory for the Bulldogs broke a run of seven straight losses to Manly and brought their season tally to seven wins – four more than each of their disastrous 2020 and 2021 campaigns.
However, 2022 was still undisputedly another failure for a team that hasn’t made finals since 2016. Further improvement is predicted for 2023 with new full-time coach Cameron Ciraldo taking the helm and further big-name signings Reed Mahoney and Viliame Kikau, who have both been selected for their Bulldogs debuts.
On the other hand, injuries derailed Manly’s 2022 campaign, but Tom Trbojevic has passed a fitness test and will make his long-awaited return. With Josh Schuster out, Cooper Johns will partner Daly Cherry-Evans in the halves. The Sea Eagles will be hoping to return to the form that saw them make the 2021 grand final, and they will be looking to their superstar fullback to lead the way.
The Bulldogs, however, will be confident in their own chances, with new faces in key positions and a fresh start under a new coach. This match promises to be a closely fought contest, with both teams looking to set the tone for their seasons with a strong showing in Round 1.
