Queensland back-rower Matt Gillett is in doubt for Wednesday’s State of Origin series decider in Sydney after suffering a groin injury.
The Maroons have released a statement saying Gillett will miss Sunday’s opposed session after experiencing groin soreness following training on Friday.
Queensland official Darren Lockyer has indicated 18th man Ethan Lowe is on standby to make his Maroons debut in Origin III.
“He (Gillett) has had a groin strain and Lowe is 18th man. I am not sure when (coach Kevin Walters) will make a call if Gillo plays,” Lockyer told Nine Network on Sunday.
Maroons doctor Matt Hislop said he would continue to monitor 20-game Origin veteran Gillett ahead of Origin III.
“Matt Gillett experienced groin soreness during Friday’s field session and as a precaution, was removed from the field,” he said.
“He has had scans and is receiving treatment.
“We will continue to provide treatment and assess his progress to give him every opportunity to play.
“As a further precaution, Gillett won’t take part in the Maroons opposed session with the Queensland under 20s this afternoon.”
At first Gillett appeared to come off the field on Friday after aggravating the broken nose which he suffered ahead of Queensland’s 38-6 game two loss in Perth.
