Melbourne Storm vs Manly Sea Eagles Preview

Archrivals Melbourne and Manly square off for the second time this season, the Storm flying in third with four wins from their last five and the 12th-placed Sea Eagles on the ropes with just two wins from their last seven.

Manly has won its last two against Melbourne (after losing the previous six) – a 36-30 thriller in Round 16 last year and an 18-8 result in Round 7 this year underpinned by brutal defence seen all too rarely from the Sea Eagles in 2023.

That was biggest statement made by Anthony Seibold’s side this year.

Over the past month they have carved out massive wins in Canberra and at home to the Dolphins inspired by Tom Trbojevic and Daly Cherry-Evans, while sinking to aimless losses to Newcastle and Parramatta without the Origin duo.

Last week’s 34-4 defeat to the Eels was characterised by an alarming lack off effort or enterprise from a side that had piled 58 points on the Dolphins a week earlier.

DCE is named at halfback, but ‘Turbo’ is only in the reserves list as Seibold waits to see how he pulls up from Origin.

Melbourne has named Queensland trio Cam Munster, Harry Grand and Xavier Coates to back up, while Justin Olam returns from a concussion break at Marion Seve’s expense.

Christian Welch is back from suspension, Tui Kamikamica is out and Nelson Asofa-Solomona makes a second-row switch.

The Storm reacted to a heavy loss in Townsville in ideal fashion, crushing Cronulla 54-10 at home before comfortably accounting for Wests Tigers 28-6 at Campbelltown without their Origin contingent.

Rookie winger Will Warbrick bagged four tries in the latter win.

The Sea Eagles have won two of their last three in Melbourne but were trounced 28-8 at AAMI Park midway through last season.

Melbourne has won its last five at AAMI Park by an average margin of 18.4 points and will be too strong for a Manly side barely clinging to creditability.
