Mitchell Pearce in form of his career: Dad

A head-knock may have left Mitchell Pearce hazy about his performance in the Origin series opener but his famous father Wayne Pearce has no doubts about his form.

“Without a doubt it’s the most consistent form he’s ever been in, in his career,” Pearce senior said on the eve of State of Origin II at ANZ Stadium, where his son has the chance to put years of Origin heartache behind him.

“I think he’s only going to get better.”

Pearce was assisted from the field at Suncorp Stadium after a crunching tackle left him with a heavy concussion, but not before he scored a crucial try just before the break in the Blues’ win.

“The try before halftime broke the spirit of the Queenslanders,” Wayne Pearce told AAP.

While Mitchell is in the spotlight, his 57-year-old dad can speak from the experience of being of the greatest Blues players – and the only person to win a State of Origin series in a clean sweep both as a player and a coach.

While NSW fans were already eyeing the coveted Origin shield, he said the Blues players could not afford that luxury if they were to secure it.

“You’ve got to forget about winning the series, they’ve just got to go out there and do their absolute best … This is the most important game in their lives so far.”
