Napa denied debatable try for Maroons

Queensland have been denied a contentious try by the video referees as the Maroons spluttered through the first half of State of Origin I at Suncorp Stadium.

Napa appeared to have reduced NSW’s 8-0 lead to four points with the kick to come when he dived on a Daly Cherry-Evans grubber which bounced off the goalposts.

It appeared to be a big moment for the Maroons after NSW took the early ascendancy, however bunker official Jared Maxwell ruled a knock on.

The prop appeared to ground the ball with his forearm, which is legal under NRL rules.

But Maxwell disagreed despite after on-field official Gerard Sutton sought clarification after signalling a try.

“Play that in real time, that’s a try every day of the week,” former NSW skipper Andrew Johns said during the Nine Network commentary.

However, former Blues coach Phil Gould disagreed: “He’s knocked it on … it’s hit his wrists, he hasn’t got control of that.”

It was one of three golden opportunities blown by the home side in the first half as they went to the break down 8-0.

After Will Chambers broke the Blues defence open on the right side in the 18th minute, they went close to scoring but Dane Gagai was wrapped up by Josh Addo-Carr.

From the next play they had NSW shot for numbers on the right flank but Corey Oates put his foot into touch.

Then with eight minutes remaining in the first half, Cameron Munster prised open the line with a dummy that confused Latrell Mitchell.

He had Daly Cherry-Evans unmarked on the inside but spun the ball right and James Tedesco pulled off a try-saver on Chambers.
