New Zealand Warriors vs Dolphins Preview

Saturday’s schedule kicks off with the Warriors getting a second crack at taking advantage of an Origin-depleted side from Queensland on home soil.

The Warriors bottled a gift-wrapped opportunity in Napier last week via their worst showing of the season, losing 26-22 to a Broncos side missing five rep stars on the back of five early missed tryscoring chances, horrendous errors that led to points and poor execution.

In a 2023 anomaly Shaun Johnson was a mixed bag and Luke Metcalf’s club debuts had more highlights than lowlights.

Addin Fonua-Blake, Charnze Nicoll Klokstad and Dallin Watene-Zeleniak were huge with the Warriors dominating yardage and they almost won at the death.

The cavalry returns for the Warriors in the form of hooker Wayde Egan and interchange duo Dylan Walker and Mitch Barnett.

Freddy Lussick (head knock), Demitric Sifukula and an unlucky Tom Ale drop out of the side as the Warriors look to avoid their fifth loss in six games.

The Dolphins’ successfully navigated their first Origin period test, recovering from a gritty but error-strewn and ill-disciplined loss to the Storm with a convincing 26-12 win over the Dragons in Redcliffe.

Jeremy Marshall-King and Jamayne Isaako continued their career-best seasons with starring roles.

Wayne Bennett has not named Origin duo Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow and Tom Gilbert, retaining the same 17.

While they are 7-5 and sixth on the ladder, the Dolphins have not won back-to-back games since their 3-0 start and are searching for some consistency.

The Warriors are 2-1 in Auckland this season, most recently shut out by the Roosters on a short turnaround in Round 9.

This is only the Dolphins’ fifth match away from Brisbane going 2-2 outside their home city so far.

Like last week, the 6-6 Warriors look a bit short as 7.5-point favourites and have covered just once in their last four games.

The Dolphins have navigated constant line-up changes well all season and are enticing $2.46 underdog value, while at the very least they should push the hosts all the way.
