He is one of the NRL finals’ great feel-good stories.
But Melbourne centre Curtis Scott has been warned by Justin Hodges that there won’t be a happy ending when he lines up against Sydney Roosters’ Latrell Mitchell on Saturday night.
Scott, 21, has added another chapter to his remarkable comeback tale after relegating Queensland centre Will Chambers to the Storm bench for the second straight week.
He will start at right centre in their blockbuster preliminary final clash with the Roosters at the SCG after rewarding Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy for a remarkable show of faith.
Bellamy last week rolled the dice and benched veteran Chambers, unleashing Scott who starred in their 32-0 semi-final thumping of Parramatta.
It was just Scott’s second game of first grade since May after recovering from a broken foot and plenty of self doubt.
But former Test centre Hodges warned Scott that his dream NRL return may become a nightmare when he takes on the man he considered “the best”, Mitchell.
“I think all the pressure goes on young Scott,” he told Fox Sports’ NRL Tonight.
“He is going to have his hands full. He is going up against the best centre in the game.
“Latrell is blessed with everything – speed, power, big plays and has that massive fend.
“I know Scott is only young and they have got Will Chambers on the bench who can come on and fill that role but I think all the pressure is on Scott.”
Hodges said he knew what Scott had to do to stop Mitchell but couldn’t see it happening on Saturday night.
“Curtis is aggressive and that is what he needs to be,” he said.
“He needs to get up in Latrell’s face, take his time and space away.
“But I can’t see anyone stopping Latrell Mitchell. And behind a massive forward pack that just makes him even more powerful.”
