Origin can save Qld’s football woes: Moore

State of Origin can’t come soon enough for Billy Moore.

Queensland’s three NRL teams have sat outside the top eight for the last month, but the owner of the famous “Queenslander” cry says there is plenty to suggest the Maroons’ Origin dominance won’t go the same way.

Queensland have won 11 of the last 12 Origin series but the form of the state’s NRL teams this season has been average at best.

“Across the board we’re bleak and being five per cent off, when the gap between good and bad is so small … is all it takes,” Moore told AAP.

He said the state’s rugby league fans have been spoiled for a long time with the good form shown by its teams.

“We’ve had so much good football from the state, we’re used to the Cowboys and Broncos being top four or six,” he said.

“It’s the blanket theory; they’re pulling everyone else up and when they’re not doing well you really notice it.”

He said the form of high-profile signing Jack Bird was at the centre of the Broncos’ struggles while inept defence was the simple answer to all three Queensland NRL clubs’ woes.

“Let’s face it, Jack Bird’s been terrible. He was red hot in 2016 but not last year and people tend to forget that,” Moore told AAP.

However he is confident Queenslanders thirsting for that winning feeling only need to wait until the June 6 Origin opener.

“Origin is never a sure thing, but we have an amazing spine with Cameron Smith, Billy Slater and Ben Hunt in great form,” he said.

“And in 18 months I think Cameron Munster will be the best player in the world.”

The Broncos host the Sydney Roosters while the Cowboys meet South Sydney this weekend in games Moore says will be crucial for their season’s hopes.

“If the Cows lose it’s season gone I reckon, and another stumble at home for the Broncos will really hurt,” he said.

“I’m surprised with where the Cowboys are at, but the (Broncos) squad isn’t a top eight squad – it was always a question of if Wayne Bennett could work his magic and squeeze the lemon.”
