Panthers’ Kikau vows to keep aggression

Penrith second-rower Viliame Kikau remains none the wiser about the shoulder charge rules, but vows to maintain the rage upon his return from suspension.

Kikau will make a welcome return for Friday’s crucial battle with Cronulla after completing his two-game ban for shoulder charging against St George Illawarra.

But he comes back more confused about the laws than prior to his incident.

“I have no idea about what the rules (are) nowadays, to be honest. You don’t want to take that aggression out from the game,” Kikau said on Monday.

“That’s what makes rugby league different from other sports, the aggression and contact, but obviously the rules change every year.

“You’ve got to protect smaller players.

“(But) I think it doesn’t change for me after those two weeks (suspended). I’m still going to be aggressive, but I’ve just got to be aware of how I do that.”

There was plenty of confusion about the incident given Kikau was initially sin-binned for what was ruled to be a late shot on Dragons No.7 Darren Nicholls.

However, he was later charged and found guilty of a shoulder charge.

“It is really confusing. I try my best to get out of the tackle (but) obviously when a half comes in, it’s the back-rower’s job to make him play,” Kikau said.

“It makes it easier for your half to make the read.

“He comes up to the line and he slipped as well as he was passing, that’s how he fell. I think they thought I was going in too hard and made a tackle on his head.”

Kikau’s absence proved to be a crucial blow for the Panthers, who dropped both games, including Saturday’s shock loss to Canterbury.

The back-to-back defeats resulted in Ivan Cleary’s side tumbling out of the top eight ahead of a crunch match against a suddenly red-hot Cronulla side.

The club is also sweating on Tuesday’s verdict at the NRL judiciary where veteran James Maloney is contesting a grade-one tripping charge.

A guilty decision would result in a one-game ban.

Kikau’s inclusion means impressive rookie Liam Martin or Isaah Yeo are expected to move to the right edge, with Frank Winterstein likely to miss out.

Kikau, 24, said he is determined to make the most of his enforced rest.

“I still trained in those two weeks but obviously not playing, I think it’s just a good freshen up for me,” he said.

“This time of the year, you gotta take whatever rest you can get. It was not a good one, but I took it as a blessing in disguise for me to freshen up.”
