After conceding 50 points in Round 1, the Sydney Roosters now face the NRL’s toughest test—a showdown with four-time reigning premiers Penrith.

The Panthers will play their first game at CommBank Stadium, their temporary home while BlueBet Stadium undergoes redevelopment.

Fresh off a hard-fought 28-22 victory over Cronulla in Las Vegas, Penrith showed their trademark resilience, with Nathan Cleary, Isaah Yeo, Dylan Edwards, and Liam Martin once again leading the charge. As in past seasons, they appear to have seamlessly adapted to life without Jarome Luai and James Fisher-Harris.

Brian To’o returns on the wing in a massive boost, pushing Paul Alamoti to center and Luke Garner to the bench, with Luron Patea dropping out. Casey McLean has been cleared to play on the opposite wing after a head knock in Round 1.

For the Roosters, Round 1 started well with an early long-range try at Allianz Stadium, but that was their only highlight in a 50-14 drubbing at the hands of Brisbane.

New centre duo Robert Toia and Mark Nawaqanitawase were among the few positives, but the team’s halves lacked direction, and a forward pack stacked with rep players was completely outmuscled.

Adding to their woes, Victor Radley (concussion) is out, with Round 1 debutant Salesi Foketi set to start and former Eel Makahesi Makatoa joining the bench.

Penrith has dominated this matchup, winning 10 straight against the Roosters, with five of those victories by margins of 20 or more—including a commanding 30-10 triumph in last year’s qualifying final.

The Panthers are overwhelming $1.06 favorites, and unless early-season rust or travel fatigue plays a role, another lopsided result seems likely.
