Raiders re-sign breakout star until 2023

Canberra fullback Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad revealed the man he sat behind for two NRL seasons helped propel his breakout 2019, which led to a contract extension on Tuesday.

Nicoll-Klokstad debut for the Warriors in 2017 but failed to play first-grade last year, stuck behind eventual Dally M medal winner Roger Tuivasa-Sheck.

The 23-year-old joined the Raiders in February on a two-year deal and has proved a revelation for the Green Machine, with the breakout star re-signing until the end of 2023.

Nicoll-Klokstad admitted he called Tuiviasa Scheck – who he’ll face in the final round on Saturday – for advice several times this season.

“It was nerve-racking (coming to Canberra). I had a few people that I spoke to quite a lot when I first came over with the self-doubt stuff,” Nicoll-Klodstad said.

“(Tuiviasa Scheck) has even been one of the people I’ve turned to during this year and asked for advice and it was pretty valid.

“Some of the stuff he was saying I hadn’t really looked at it like that before, so for me to able to go to him and ask him those sort of questions is pretty special.

“He’s a freak. It’s funny, I just watch him and think ‘Woah what was that’. I’ve got a lot of respect for him.”

Tuivasa-Sheck wasn’t the only opposition player Nicoll-Klokstad drew inspiration from this season.

The Kiwi young gun is keen to copy the journeys of Sydney Roosters duo Latrell Mitchell and Joseph Manu.

“When I debuted (in 2017) Latrell got put back to reserve grade and him and Joseph Manu were in the same boat going up and down, up and down,” Nicoll-Klokstad said.

“They got given a really good crack the year after and went on to win a premiership, play for their country and Latrell played State of Origin.

“It’s pretty special what 12 to 18 months can do and just giving someone an opportunity.

“Nothing is guaranteed. I still pinch myself each and every week and I’m just so grateful to be here for another four years.”

The extension is a huge boost for Canberra who are almost certain to finish in the top four and secure a second chance in the finals.
