Canberra want to honour skipper Jarrod Croker in his 250th NRL appearance by winning the club’s biggest game in years.
The Raiders host premiers the Sydney Roosters in a mouth-watering top-three clash at Canberra Stadium on Sunday.
The teams are only separated on the ladder by points difference which means the winner will likely finish behind Melbourne and clinch two home finals.
Canberra officials are expecting close to 20,000 fans which would be the club’s biggest home crowd since the 2016 finals.
The Raiders have won four straight games and seven of their past eight, while the Roosters are riding a three-game winning streak.
The highly-anticipated match marks yet another milestone for Croker, who is the Green Machine’s all-time leading point scorer and try scorer.
He only sits behind Jason Croker (318) in games played for the club.
“It’s something I’m very proud of. If you told me I’d play 250 games for this club all those years ago I would have laughed at you,” Croker said.
“It seems like only yesterday I was talking about my first game, which was against the Roosters. But I don’t want to get too excited or carried away, it’s still just another game of football.
“We’ve been playing some really good footy over the last couple of weeks but you’re still only a game or two away from falling out of that top four.
“We’re preparing for one of the biggest games we’ve played in a long, long time but it’s still just a round game.
“We just need to focus on us and make sure we stay in that top four. It’s a massive challenge but at home and hopefully 20,000 people out there, it should be perfect conditions.”
Canberra co-captain Josh Hodgson said Croker wasn’t even close to nearing the end of his career and backed the club to win for the 28-year-old centre.
“I’m sure he’ll go on to break the 300-game record and hopefully even push for the 400 one and be the first Raider to do that,” Hodgson said.
“He’s Canberra through and through and great on and off the field, and so consistent for us, especially with his kicking in those clutch moments.
“To get 250 is a massive achievement and hopefully, we can get the win for him.”
Second-rower Elliott Whitehead echoed the sentiment: “We need to stay in that top four so we’re going to do as much as we can to get the win for Jarrod. We have a good challenge this week to see where we’re really at and hopefully we can turn up and put in the performance we know we’re capable of, because getting the two points is vital this week.”
