Sydney Roosters coach Trent Robinson has hailed the versatility of veteran winger Brett Morris following his historic tryscoring heroics.
Morris recorded a stunning 12-minute hat trick at the SCG on Sunday to spearhead the Roosters’ to a 58-6 thumping of Gold Coast at SCG.
The treble vaulted him into the premiership’s all-time top-10 list with 152 tries alongside Harold Horder (1912-24) and Manu Vatuvei (2004-17).
With the finals five weeks away, the 33-year-old now appears a lock for the Tricolours’ right wing spot ahead of injured English international Ryan Hall.
The 2010 St George Illawarra premiership-winner has been a left winger for most of his career but has been asked to re-invent himself at the Roosters.
And Robinson hasn’t forgotten Morris’ openness to adapt, having played in the more unfamiliar position of centre for the past month.
“I put him back to the right wing last week and it was the first time he’d played there since round two,” Robinson said.
“He came as a winger, specialist winger; everyone knows him as that.
“(But) he’s played left centre, right centre, right wing, left wing, fullback and he’s also defended in the half position.
“There’s a guy that’s willing to do whatever it takes to do a job for the team.”
Robinson pinpointed Morris’ versatility, experience and confidence as vital to a team now on track to defend its title.
His hat trick lifted his tally to six tries in just eight games for the club.
“He goes back to the wing and he gets his rewards because of the work that he’s put in for others throughout the course of the season,” Robinson said.
“Brett’s very confident in knowing his role as a person and as a player and he passes that on in really subtle ways to the players around him.
“He gives (centre) Joey Manu confidence.
“He gives us coaches confidence, going, ‘Yep, I’ve got it. I can do that’, goes about his task and then does it with a really classy style.
“He’s been very important for us. Missing him was disappointing there for that (three-month) period but he’s played some positions since he’s come back.”
