Re-sign with the Sydney Roosters or retire.
They are the two options Sydney Roosters veteran Mitchell Aubusson has given himself as he weighs up whether to hang up his boots at the end of the NRL season.
After arriving at Bondi Junction as a 16-year-old, the Roosters’ Mr Fix It is facing up to the prospect that 2019 could be his last year.
He will run out for his 281st game against Canterbury on Sunday and sits third on the club’s all-time list for most games behind Anthony Minichiello (302) and Luke Ricketson (301).
And if the 31-year-old can come to an agreement with the Tri-Colours to go around again, he will likely become the foundation club’s most capped player in 2020.
He said he was refusing to entertain the prospect of playing for a rival club and had no interest in going overseas, meaning his only chance of extending his career was to re-sign.
“I’ve had good chats with Robbo and management about where I’m at,” Aubusson said.
“They’re happy for me to wait a while to make a call. At the moment I’m just preparing for each game, I’m really comfortable with where we are at with those talks.
“We’ve had some really honest talks.
“I definitely won’t be playing at another club or going overseas. In the next few weeks we’ll just make a call.”
Aubusson was last year described by coach Trent Robinson as the “ultimate club man”.
Since debuting in 2007, the two-time premiership winner has covered every position on the field except fullback, halfback and front-row.
He said his decision would hinge on whether he felt his body was still up to the rigours of the NRL and he felt he could still make a contribution.
“That’s a good question, but as of right now, I feel like I do,” Aubusson said when asked if he felt like his body was up to the challenge.
“I feel I’ve still got the hunger there to do something special with this team.
“Winning the comp last year was so special.
“I wanted to see how I felt halfway through the year after winning the comp, whether I still had that hunger and desire to play well and prepare each week and play for my family and the guys here.
“I still have that. Until that goes away, I’ll keep on ticking along.”
