Embarrassed and out of form, Sydney Roosters forwards face their biggest test of the NRL season against Canterbury’s monster pack at ANZ Stadium on Friday.
The premiers have struggled to 5-5, while Canterbury are at the top of the table following seven straight wins with the platform consistently laid by their giant forward pack.
Canterbury will be missing halves Trent Hodkinson and Josh Reynolds to NSW Origin duty, alongside centre Josh Morris, but back-rower Tony Williams is the only player who will be missing from the Dogs’ rampant pack.
“Considering the way me and my forwards have been playing the last couple of weeks, out of form, it is going to be a massive challenge for us,” said Roosters prop Sam Moa on Thursday.
“They are at the top because they have the best forward pack at the moment and it is a chance for us to get on par with them and show what we have got.
The Roosters, who will be without Queensland back-rower Aidan Guerra and NSW’s Michael Jennings and Daniel Tupou, were thrashed 42-10 by North Queensland last start.
That loss was compounded by the news this week that representative back-rower Boyd Cordner would miss six to eight weeks after undergoing ankle surgery on Wednesday.
“We are embarrassed as to how we performed last week, so it has been a matter of head down bum up ahead of the game tomorrow night,” said Moa.
“While it is not the end of the world it was certainly the kick up the backside we needed last week.
“We were very disappointed, you are bound to lose a game here and there but the way we lost just wasn’t us.
“We are looking to make amends tomorrow night, to put in a good solid performance which reflects what we are as a club.”
