Sacrifices reward Manly’s Sironen in NRL

Cryotherapy, ice baths and no beers – it’s probably as far removed from the pre-game rituals of his father’s rugby league days but it’s how Curtis Sironen believes he’s finally managed to get on top of his injury woes.

With dad Paul watching from the stands, Sironen marked his 100th NRL appearance on Saturday with a try-scoring double as Manly romped to a 30-12 win over Gold Coast.

It’s fair to say Sironen’s path to that milestone has been tougher than most.

After debuting at the Wests Tigers as a teenager, injuries have been a recurring theme in Sironen’s career including a pectoral tear (2017) and a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (2018) in his first two seasons at Manly.

Sironen’s injury woes have been so bad he reckons there are 50 to 60 matches left behind in the treatment room on his way to game 100.

Now 25, Sironen has placed himself on a booze ban in 2019 – the latest in a line of personal rituals that includes osteo-chiropractic treatments, cryotherapy and ice baths that he undertakes to ensure he is as fit as possible every week.

“It’s something that I’ve given a crack and, it sounds like it’s pretty easy, but it can be easy to go out and have a few with the boys,” Sironen said.

“It does take a toll on your body.

“Everyone’s different. Some of the boys can go and do that and they’re sweet but, for me, I think it’s something that’s working.”

It certainly worked against the Titans, with Sironen crashing over in the eighth and 27th minutes to set the Sea Eagles on their way to victory.

“It means a lot. There’s been a lot of ups and downs. Last year was really tough watching another full season out – it makes it all the better,” he said.

“I just want to make sure I’m healthy each week; that’s the most important for me – just playing every game. That’s my goal at the moment.”
