Salford hit for Super League extra player

A – The Rugby Football League (RFL) on Friday said it had docked Salford City Reds two points for having 14 players on the field during a Super League match against Castleford Tigers.

The RFL said in a statement that its operational rules appeal tribunal imposed the sanction, as well as a STG5000 ($A8200) fine, for the infringement on April 27.

In the 77th minute of the match, which Salford won 34-30, Salford’s Darrell Griffin and former Manly NRL player Vic Mauro, who was replacing him from the bench, were both involved in tackles.

Salford had appealed against the original STG10,000 ($A16,400) fine imposed at a hearing on May 8.

The points’ deduction means second-last Salford swap places with basement club London Broncos.

Elsewhere in Super League, Wakefield Trinity have continued their player retention policy by tying down former Wests Tigers and Cronulla centre Dean Collis to a new contract that will keep him at the Rapid Solicitors Stadium until the end of 2016.

The 27-year-old was coach Richard Agar’s first signing for the Wildcats when he joined them from the Sharks ahead of the 2012 season and has been in impressive form this year.

“I’m really happy to get it out of the way,” Collis said. “I always wanted to stay at the club.

“I’m settled here. It’s a great group we’ve got here at the moment and I think, over the next few years, we can really build something exciting.”

Collis joins forwards Andy Raleigh and Chris Annakin in signing new deals and Agar says the club is in talks with a number of other senior players.
